December 12, 1950

New York. Clear & Cold

Got up at 7 a.m. - Finished packing and Goggie and Gampie brought us down to Pier 26 and left us there as we had to come to the ship on a Navy bus. Sandy could hardly stay awake. Sam knew several of the people on the bus and we plan to play Canasta later. Goggie and Gampie came on board to see us off and of course our lunch time came at sailing time, so while Sam and Sandy ate I went out on deck and spent the next 20 minutes wigwagging over the rail. Same & Sandy got out on deck in time to wave too - of course both Sam & I choked up and why did they have to play "Now is the Hour"?! Of course I cried and Sam was close and Sandy was completely befuddled.

So far none of us are sick, the chow is excellent and everyone has been very, very nice and cooperative - It's getting rough again.

Frascati & Monte Compatri. Hot & clear. Went first to Frascati and then Alfredo took us on the bus to Monte Compatri - ate a delicious meal of spaghetti and scallopine, then hiked first to the Internation Rescue Home for Italian children and then up to San Silvestro Monastary on top of a moutain. It's 2,000 meters up! It was simply beautiful. Went back down & ate and watched the people in the town carry water from the fountain in huge copper urns on their heads. Usually one on their head and one on their hip. Got home about 8:30 very tired - brought 4 bottles of Frascati Superiore home with us.

October 2, 1951

Rome, Italy. Warm but very much Fall... Expected to leave yesterday for Naples and board the ship today, but at the last minute word was received that the ship would arrive on the 4th, so as of right now expect to leave tomorrow in the early A.M. for Naples & sail Thursday. However, due to an extra stop are not sure yet of exact sailing date. All of which leaves us hanging in mid air with suit cases half packed, all poised to leave but not sure of anything.

December 26, 1950

Bremerhaven, Germany. Cloudy & cold. Finally got here - we were all docked by the time Sam and I woke up. We had to rush to make it to breakfast - afterwards, about 10:30, they gave liberty card's and we took off - The women stare unashamedly at American women, because of their clothes, and they don't stare and leave, they stare until we leave. The buildings that have been bombed give you a sick feeling in your stomach, but as far as I'm concerned, there's no trace of pity. It wasn't supposed to have been as bad as Berlin, but it still isn't good. We went to the Army P.X. for some beer, then back to the ship after much ado with the German bus driver about no A.G. cards. Evidentially they don't think a passport is enough but they finally just gave up and let us on. Went to the Bon Hoff later and drank beer & ate liverwurst sandwiches - mighty good - after that beer I feel as tho I can go on. The Germans loved Sandy - and everyone rubs his head. Most o...
