The Navy transport Gen. R. E. Callahan is returning here after a burned out thrust bearing on a high-pressure turbine was discovered about 150 miles at sea. A message from her master, Capt. J. Symchik, said she would arrive early this morning and requested that tugs meet the vessel at Ambrose Lightship.
A statement released by the Military Sea Transportation Service, which operates the ship, said foreign particles in the lubricating oil were responsible but that damage was not serious. The vessel's lubricating system will be flushed out, it was explained, and she will return to sea soon.
The accident was described as a routine occurrence and sabotage was ruled out. The General Callahan sailed from the Brooklyn Army Base for Bremerhaven, Germany, at 2:30 P.M. Tuesday, with 400 service men and their dependents for assignment to European stations.
